Another failure with same symptom, wire damage. Look closely at the wire few inches from the pump body, sign of being nibble.

This is the second pump that fail the same way in the same tank, never had happen before. The tank was not new and I had pumps in it before without any problem.

First it happen : Here as photo below.

Initially I thought it was the pump build quality, then could it be the wire chafe against the fibre tank. The pump has been use before and the tank is not new, no failure of this nature.

I know rats love to chew on wire, sometimes we can find them electrocuted while trying to munch through the insulator. But this wire is underwater, and rat dont do scuba dive.

One possibilities... its the Pacu that did it. Only this tank has Pacu fish and I only started doing pacu this year. I never had this problem before.

Another pump fail, this time the pump is running slightly more than a month. Electrical cable that was in the tank got damaged and I dont know what causes it.

I almost got an electric shock when I was about to check the pump operation, luckily I manage to back off before any bigger shock is felt.

Other pump running in the same tank doesnt have any problem like this, there also sign of worn on the spindle. This pump was use the most for two months total, its doesnt look good.

Thats it, I will not buy this brand until I can be sure that this will not happen again.

Lemongrass that I grown in the gutter few months back will outgrown its pot if not transferred to a bigger container.

On gutterbed, this is the largest pot its able to acommodate. Therefor instead of a larger pot, I need to plant these into few pots.

Trimmed and need to be removed from its pots.

Massive roots after few months, this root ball is easily scraped off with a knife giving way for easy plant removal.

Its out, looks like theres enough for four pots.

Four pots done.

Insect and caterpillar are a common threat in aquaponics setup just as in any garden. When you do aquaponics, most of the time people automatically thought it is organic. To be honest Aquaponics and Organic are two different things.

A setup can be aquaponics and organic at the same time if its follow the strict organic farming or gardening guidelines. However it will be difficult if you are just starting out on aquaponics and at the same time trying to follow the organic requirements due to too steep a learning curve. Those that has practice either aquaponics or organics for a long period of time then it will be an easier process, especially if they are already practising Organic gardening.

I had tried various organic spray to control bugs, caterpillars etc, none seems to work therefore I use non-organic insecticide to get those under control. Some aquaponics purist may not agree with this, but its okay. Everyone are entitle to their own way of doing things.

I had use non-organic insecticide as a direct spray onto the plants in my growbed, and so far I do not have any fish killed. I follow strictly to the instruction on the label, observe all precaution and most of the time I will use a more diluted mix.

A safe way to apply non-organic insecticide is to apply them away from the growbed, this is easy if you have plants grown in pots where they are easily move to a safer environment for spraying.

Even through I practice direct spraying onto growbed plants, those plants that in pots Ill spray them away from growbed and the fish tank.
