diy aquaponics kit | Pandanus Maximus

0

diy aquaponics kit

Stick a few of these pandan cuttings few weeks ago just to get some plants in one of my smaller set for cycling. It is now time to replace the pandan (Buffer plants) with something more challenging.
They are very easy and a fast grower, less than four weeks and their roots system already going out of the pot.
Healthy root growth and will out grown its surrounding growbed in no time. If you intent to grow pandan in Aquaponics, do it in a square foot container and place it in the growbed.
The container must have drainage hole to get water and nutrient circulated then all will be fine.

diy aquaponics pdf | Potting Garlic Chives Kuchai Redo

0

diy aquaponics pdf

Since I am doing most of my planting in pots, these Kuchai plants is no exception. I had to put them in pots so that it can be easily contained and transplanted elsewhere if needed. I use those slotted pot which is great in water drainage and just nice for LECA.
Garlic Chives thrives in Aquaponics and its more than enough for a small family consumption on a 3ft x 2ft growbed. In fact 1 square feet is all that is needed for an average household. So decided to transplant these to individual pots later I can decide what to do with it.
As above photo they grow really well in LECA, and made it easy to redo this plant, all I had to do is gently pull out the clumps and they will all come out.
Root ball and all, can be easily lifted out of the growbed.
They have shallow root, so it is not that invasive to the siphon like mint of some other plants making this Garlic Chive ideal on a media based siphon flood and drain aquaponics growbed.
Put all in the slotted pot with some LECA at its base.
Some of the pots I put two clumps like photo above otherwise I would run out of pots.
Filled up with LECA and just wiggle a bit to give it a snug fit.. and all done.
Thats three pot awaiting to be placed in the growbed.
Smaller clumps I put two to a pot like these above.
These Chives multiply by rhizomes within few months it will spread outward from center making the clumps bigger. Few of these I planted from seeds and some from nursery bought plants.
All plants out, and it only takes about 30 minutes to do, since I am using pots the water level in the growbed were adjusted to a lower level.
Chives dont need thick growbed, six inches is more than enough.
Altogether 17 pots, the photo is a bit grainy due its getting dark.
I planted eight pot in the existing growbed and left with these nine pots to be place in the back lane CRAFTS set.
Nine left are placed in my back lane set

diy aquaponics nutrients | Dividing Chives

0

diy aquaponics nutrients

All the previous Tomato plants has finish their season, those are determinate type and only lasted for a few months. As usual if I am too busy or while waiting for another plant to grow, I will use buffer plants like Mint, Vietnamese Coriander or other simple plants to get the growbed filled in shortest time possible.

This time at the back aquaponics set, I am dividing the Chives to have it on the ex Tomato growbed while waiting for other plants to grow or maybe just have it there for these next few months.

Before sub dividing the Chives for propagation it is best to trim all its leaves and letting it grow for at least two weeks.
After two weeks the leave are long enough for it to be easily handle. If its too long or too short then it will make it more difficult.
This one pot I usually split it into two, it is not a problem to sub divide more like into three or four separate pots.
If you divide it into more pots it will takes longer to grow and may be a waste of growbed space since the pot will take up those area.
Average Asian family will only use half of the pot for their cooking at a time the most and I uses less,  so you dont need to have many pot of Chives. I would recommend the most is two,
Above are six pot from initial three, and today I manage to subdivide ten pots making a total of twenty pots.
This growbed above have twelve pots and after about three month it will double in quantity.
Chives is one of the easiest to grow in Aquaponics, it do not require any insect control since there is no pest attacking it. This plant do have good demand in Asian dishes and a worthwhile cash crop that we can grow densely in a very small space.

Ideal for urban surrounding.

murray hallam diy aquaponics video | Equatorial Lowland Strawberry Project Journal 11th Oct 2014

murray hallam diy aquaponics video

One of my plant got aphid and some ants are taking advantage of this tending to farm the aphid honey pots.
If not treated it will weaken this plant and worst could cause virus or fungal infection. I had to get rid of it quick.
Isolate the plant from the rest and at first I try to get rid of the ants by using this ants bait that could eliminate the ants. But it dont seems to work, because they are busy harvesting those honey pots and show no interest to my bait.
For a quick action, decide to clip off two of the most affected leaves and discard them to kill majority of the aphids. The remaining leaves are not that bad, but I must do something to stop recurring.
Leaves cut and sprayed with organic pest repellent, if needed I can make do with soap solution. Since I had this spray at hand, just try it out first before proceeding to the next step.
I had to isolate this plant, to ensure those aphid dont fly off or hop off to nearest safe place and will just makes things worst. Luckily the plants are all in individual pots, which makes it easy to do this.
