diy aquaponics for beginners | Aquaponics Tips Too High Water In Growbed

0

diy aquaponics for beginners

What will happen if you have too high water level in the growbed?

Initially high water level will cause higher evaporation and water will be use more due to this. To ensure this dont happen it is recommended that the water level is at least 1 inch below the hydroton or media level.

Above photo the water level is about 1 inch below the hydroton and it is just nice for most setup.

What else could happen?

Algae and some time moss will grow, moss could turn into fern in some cases. Algae and mosses will compete with plants for nutrient and it also will make the growbed looks dirty as below.

As a general rule 1 inch water below the media is acceptable, this is the DryZone of an aquaponics growbed. This DryZone can be thicker depending on type of plants grown.

A siphon with adjustable standpipe height is helpful in ensuring this water level is easily achieved.

easy diy aquaponics free download | Single Barrel Gutter Growbed Set Completed

0

easy diy aquaponics free download

Single Barrel set with mini #guttergrowbed that I started building last week completed below is the photo update of the final build.

Siphon installed a above, its the same 15 mm siphon that I was experimenting for the last 1 year or so which I can safely says its good.

Siphon close up.

Potted media in place for trial running.

Water inflow is a simple "T" with elbows on the end preventing it to slip and drop off. Water pump use here is Astro AS1000, which rated at 1000 Liter per hour with 1 m head.

The actual first flush of this setup, it works like a charm. The far end is water feed from pump using this style of coupling.

With instant plants from adjacent #guttergrowbed. This set I may use initially as a seed starter and once it has fully mature I will see what to do with it. One of the growbed I may not use pots, this is to test the siphon with full growbed setting.

Well see in few months how this small simple low cost unit function.

Total cost approximately RM 160.00 thats USD 38.00 inclusive hydroton and pots.

diy desktop aquaponics | My Rice Trial in Aquaponics

0

diy desktop aquaponics

I sow these rice seed on Nov 20th 2016 in the gutterbeds as a trial to see whether aquaponics can support this plants.

Rice needs lots of water, so its a good candidate to try doing it in Aquaponics

I transplanted it to individual pots and place them in the #gutterbed, after two and a half months only did I realise it started to flower and produce rice grain.

I only keep four pots to try, and all the plant produce rice

Some reported empty husk, this I need to see in few weeks time whether it is empty or not.

Kids will love to see Rice plants, since these are grown far away from the busy cities.

Brief update on this set that I made early July and been running well. Need to test more plants and take note what improvement I can make and address problems that crop up.

So far Im happy with the setup, it is very easy to maintain and make. There are few fine bits that I need to iron out as time goes by.

Initial setup : Here

diy aquaponics tote | Gutter Growbed Revisited

0

diy aquaponics tote

Did gutter growbed in March 2010, that time I was using loop siphon and it is difficult to get right. This time Im doing it with Bell Siphon and for planting Strawberry plants.
Main reason why I am trying this again is to reduce the amount of LECA needed since Ill use pot for the plants and it will be easier to do Strawberry in rows on a step.

I need to make a shorter bell siphon since gutter is not that deep, water height the most would be three inches. Therefor the siphon will need to be cut and tailor made to three inch or less. I will try using 20 mm strainerbell siphon modified to suit. A 15 mm StrainerBell would be a good size but I had not tried this size for long.

easy diy aquaponics.com | This Years Balcony Garden attempt!

easy diy aquaponics.com

Good crop of tomatoes, no aphids since i planted lots of onions and marigolds, Blackberry bush has grown huge and still growing had to use an old clothes drying rack as a growing frame, Installed a new drip irrigation all the way around balcony from my 100liter water tank with the help from my grandson.
Biggest obstacle has been getting supplies to my apartment, carrying bags of growing mix and compost by bus is a pain to say the least, oh well at least its exercise. I am lucky with that i get 6 hours plus of sun on the balcony, but the winds can be a destroyer drying things out and breaking my tomatoes.

diy aquaponics no electricity | Single Barrel Gutter Growbed Set

0

diy aquaponics no electricity

Making a small single barrel #guttergrowbed set from surplus gutter. Six feet of gutter leftover from earlier set cut into two and endcapped.

After hot glue the ends, do a leak check to ensure all in good order. I had to redo and check it few times due to leaks, but the fix is simple enough to do.

Two 3 feet gutter resting on the barrel, this is one of the remaining barrel that I use for the craft barrel set. No additional support required as long as small plants are planted in this #guttergrowbed.

I intent to put pots in one of the gutter and direct hydroton in another to test out. Since its small, it will be easy to clean if needed.

All thats left to do now is installing the siphon and water pump.

diy small indoor aquaponics system | Gutter Growbed Pots Levelling

0

diy small indoor aquaponics system

The gutter growbed that I finished making last weekend has one problem, the pots didnt fit properly due the contour of the gutter is not uniform in its shape. Pots will tumble since it doesnt have a stable flat bottom to rest.

I was contemplating to use a 4x4 tile making a stable platform for the pots, however this may be heavy, expensive and displaces water volume.

After much trial, I figure that round tubes that I use for plants support is of right diameter to get the correct height and if I lay them side by side in the gutter they will make a raised platform for pots to sit.

It work ! Five tubes can be place in the gutter making a raised platform and the pots is stable on it. Since its a hollow tube, it doesnt displace much water volume and light in weight. I could drill holes making it even lighter and helps water circulation at the same time.

These tube were from my staking sets, Ill need to buy new ones and cut to correct length.

There you go, a very cheap and simple solution for a problem that I was facing ever since contemplating to make this set.

Cheers.

diy water pump in aquaponics system | Potted Media Base Gutter Growbed Siphon Flood Drain

0

diy water pump in aquaponics system

A year back I did emptied my growbed and uses pots to grow Gandarusa plants, this method of planting utilized much less LECA and make it less costly to make a bigger set if needed.
It did grow well for the Gandarusa plant, its long overdue that I wanted to try this method on other plants.  This simpler setup may be more viable to do on a larger scale with minimum changes to existing media base siphon flood & drain technique.
I had done gutter growbed in 2010 and its at that time was difficult to control its flood and drain reliably. I was using loop siphon due to the confine space of the gutter and it was not successful in planting anything significant.
I am giving it another go, this time I will use my 15 mm StrainerBell siphon on left as photo above. It is the smallest siphon that I had done and after tested it for almost a year, I feel its capable of controlling the flood & drain within the confines space of a rain gutter.
As a trial setup, I decided to do a simple gutter growbed setup, that could accommodate up to 9 or 10 pots place over a fish tank. This arrangement suit the small space that I have.
The gutter was kept for a long time, I got it in Nov 2014 to do this setup. Unfortunately due to the problem I am facing during that period has kept it on hold until today. Above photo I was testing the gutter for leak, I will use only two.
Made a rack for the two gutter over the fish tank from leftover dickson bars and had to join them making a longer piece.
Water feed as usual "T" with 1000 Liter per hour pump feeding the two gutter. Water head is about 18 inches.
15 mm siphon, making it as short as possible, water level is less than four inches.
This siphon has been tested on my ornamental set and had survive a full growbed rootball without failure. So I feel its time to use it for this set, anyway this is the smallest I can make.
First flush test and as you can see from above water is not level, this is because the front part of my house is slanting. I will need to adjust the rack to take up the gradient.
The rack has been adjusted, see the different between the far and the near end tank to rack gap. It is about two inches different in height to add up on the far side of the rack.
Siphon in between the pots, I will use LECA in the pots surrounding with flood & drain water. This style reduce LECA usage and we may use pebbles too at smaller quantities making it lighter.
Water feed is at one end of the gutter with siphon at another, trying to create a nutrient flow within the growbed and water movement in the fish tank between siphon outlet and pump intake.
It does flush well, will put an aerator outlet to reduce noise and at the same time giving much needed oxygen to water.

Okay, this setup needs to be cycle with fish and simple plants. LECA will go in those pots next and will get some cheap fish to ensure no mosquito breed in the tank.
