diy vertical aquaponics system | They Are Always Hungry These Tilapia

0

diy vertical aquaponics system

No matter how you feed them, they are always hungry. Tilapia has short digestive track they eat a little bit at a time but most of the time.
These are in my CRAFTS set, and they are getting bigger. I use fish pellets to feed them.
Never over feed fish, especially in Aquaponics. Water will get murky and Ammonia will shoot up. If you see foam or bubbles in the fish tank just stop feeding them for at least one day and continue after water had cleared.
Its okay for them to go hungry, they will start to feed on the algae making water and tank cleaner.
Surplus greens is good, above is the Sambung Nyawa plants that I cut and throw it to give them something to bite.
Tilapia will eat greens, one of the best is Kangkung these they will nibble in no time at all. However before feeding them greens make sure they are really hungry.
There are loads of green from my Aquaponics growbeds and its fish food.
After 1 day in the fish tanks, this is what left of the plants. Those stems can still be use as cuttings.

diy aquaponics plants | Racking for Strawberry Plants

0

diy aquaponics plants

Run out of space for new strawberry runners, October to February are the months where these plants produce lots of runners. Decide to make a rack for these new plants and maybe they can grow better before figuring what to do next.
Above container can hole about 50 pots of new strawberry plants, I will need to get same size pots to get them easily arranged.
Rack above was from surplus material that I have and reassemble to make a 3 shelf rack and I use the car boot plastic tray to hold those pots. Water added to tray and some nutrient to ensure those plants can survive. This is required since I am planting the runners without parental stolon.

diy aquaponics tote | Gutter Growbed Revisited

0

diy aquaponics tote

Did gutter growbed in March 2010, that time I was using loop siphon and it is difficult to get right. This time Im doing it with Bell Siphon and for planting Strawberry plants.
Main reason why I am trying this again is to reduce the amount of LECA needed since Ill use pot for the plants and it will be easier to do Strawberry in rows on a step.

I need to make a shorter bell siphon since gutter is not that deep, water height the most would be three inches. Therefor the siphon will need to be cut and tailor made to three inch or less. I will try using 20 mm strainerbell siphon modified to suit. A 15 mm StrainerBell would be a good size but I had not tried this size for long.

diy aquaponics system design | Back Lane CRAFT Set Goes Guttergrowbed

0

diy aquaponics system design

Replaced all the traditional growbed from my CRAFTS set it took me two days to do and what a long day today.

Started by removing all the old growbed from the set.

Gutter tested for leak, only one leak due my mistake for not noticing the slight damage part on the gutter.

Gutter placed at an incline, reducing water and make it easier to do a leak test.

I use the standard Solvent Cement for PVC and it does work really well. Use a fresh bottle and apply generously, it will seal good. As stated one leak but easily fix with a hot glue.

Once the old growbed out, a new racking needed for the gutters. Gutters are 13 ft each (4 mtr) the Dikson bars or angle iron is 10 ft long. Ill put additional length on both ends to support the extra gutter.

Using these angle iron is easy to custom make the needed rack, took me close to four hour to make it.

The rack need to be level to ensure water do not spill out from one end before the siphon operates.

Those white tubes is needed to ensure pots didnt topple and for root to hold on to something. The tubes is the electrical conduit which I often use as plants support.

Siphon use is the 15 mm mini, I need to see how it perform. On some installation siphon need to be tuned, usually the outlet pipes adjusted to make it works better.

Inflow is from one pump rated 2000 liter per hour flow at 30 watt. The power requirement for 15 mm siphon is very much less, about 1/3 of that 25 mm siphon.

Water from the pump is divided by four since there are four gutters, each with its own siphon. Easiest way to divide and distribute water in Aquaponics is by splitting it by two and four. It will divide evenly and most of the time we dont need any tap or valve to adjust.

Siphon outlet is best to be as far away from the inlet, a pair of gutter emptied into one of the left return tank while the other into the right tank. Water feed taken from the feeded tank with a single pump as stated above.

Took the above photo at 21:30 hrs, the set completed at 19:00 hrs. Need more pots.

This #guttergrowbed is mainly for small plants and leafy vegetable. It is not recommended for large plants. I will further my Aquaponics trial using this method and hopefully it can evolve into something cost effective to operate commercially.

diy aquaponics siphon | Its Tilapia Time Again This Time Deep Fried

0

diy aquaponics siphon

This current batch of Tilapia a little slow to grow, maybe not enough feed. If it is fed too much then it will form more fat in the fish. So give it a lean diet to reduce this fat, fish in the wild dont get fed twice daily, they forage for food and eat what they find.
Catch few Tilapia today and have it deep fried as a simple dinner.
Each of these are palm size and just nice for Malay cooking.
Its easy to catch since my fish tank is only 4 feet in length and about 12 inches of water.
Five Tilapia in the pail and next to get them clean and prepared.
Fresh fish, once cleaned next step is to marinate them.
I use a simple old traditional way of marinating with salt, turmeric and a bit or tamarind to flavor the fish and get rid of the fishy smell.
Let it stand for few minutes, like half an hour.
Deep fried the fish in oil until golden brown, it will give good aroma since the fish is fresh of the tank.
While its being fried, I prepare the final flavoring. Onion slice, Chili and some garlic these for the final fried together with the last piece. It doesnt matter with which, but I normally do it with the last fish.
 Last fish in..
Those onion, chili and garlic (whole) ready for your turn.
Turn over the fish, only then add the above to fried with the side needs cooking.
Once fish cooked, remove it and switch off the flame and scoop up the garnishes to add on top of the cooked fish.
Walla.. its ready.
Simple and fresh, take it with hot rice and some fresh vegetable salad.. it priceless.

diy aquaponics water filter | Bawang Dayak Update

0

diy aquaponics water filter

I planted few pots of Bawang Dayak on 2nd of August and today I am checking to see what happening to the plants.

One pot, I place in the gutter growbed and its time to split it into two pots.

As a comparison another pot I planted in coco peat soil mix and placed it in the gutter growbed, its not doing that good compared to the ones in hydroton.

Few photos of the bawang dayak in the hydroton filled pot.

Checking the roots to see any sign of root rot or any abnormality with it.

Looking good and there are signs of new bulb emerging from the cluster.

Another shot.

This plant is mainly use as a medicinal herb and not use for day to day cooking. Ill be planting four pots of this in the gutter growbed as an ornamental plant for now.
