diy aquaponics fish tank | Potted Media Water Level

0

diy aquaponics fish tank

Slotted Orchids pots that I use for growing made it very convenience to adjust water level. Since some plants require different water level, with individual pots it can be adjusted to suite the plants that in it.
These pots has good drainage and I can easily adjust its level within the growbed to suit what ever I plant. This pots are about 6" across, therefore larger plants will not be suitable.
Shallow roots plants like Strawberry, Chives and leafy vegetable is best to use these pots. At certain stage of their growth water level may need to be adjusted to ensure they grow. Especially after transplanting where water level are normally set to high. With many plants in a growbed, adjusting the growbed water level will affect all plants in it.
Having individually potted plants in the growbed, it then can be position higher or lower within the growbed to get water level as required.
Strawberry as above was just transplanted, so the water level are adjusted to be high with pots burried deeper in the growbed.
Plants like Chives, above dont require high water so I adjust the pots to be higher up making the water level relatively low.
Above is a simple illustration on what I do to achieve different water level for individual plants within same growbed. This I find easier to do since pots containing the plants can be lifted without stressing the plants much.

diy aquaponics tank | Ornamental Aquaponics Set 2nd Prototype

0

diy aquaponics tank

After more than 6 month trial of the 1st prototype, today a second unit was made. It is using plastic pot as the fish tank which is larger than earlier porcelain pot.
This set will be further tested for few more months then I will make it for others. That stand is temporary, final product the stand will be outside the fish bowl.
Filling growbed with LECA, before letting it cycle.
Siphon media guard cut to length with extender adjusted to get water level below LECA surface. Water inlet is a simple 15mm PVC piping with 1000 liter per hour pump feeding the set. Water head is about two feed that reduce the pump capacity to about 800 liter/hour.
First and second prototype, undergoing actual test to ensure trouble free operation. Ideal small unit for apartment, condominium, town and link houses. This set is also suitable for growing Strawberry using aquaponics method.

I was back on my home town when member from IAS (IndoAquaScape) invite me to attend their first JAC (Jatim Aquascape Community) meeting. Im amaze by enthusiasm from Aquascaper Indonesia. Some of the attendees are from Malang and Even Banyuwagi. They have to drive 8 hours by motorcycle just to attend.

Here are some of the photos from the event. All photos are not mine, I didnt bring camera at that time.

cheapest diy aquaponics

The year was hit and miss, got a lot of Tomatoes but also and several attacks by Aphids, I almost lost the first crop as I didnt know I had the little buggers.
again my mistake was over over planting crops too much of one thing.
I tried several different planters.

diy aquaponics system step by step | DIY LED Set for 2ft tank 2nd gen

0

diy aquaponics system step by step

From the previous design which is 6x3W LED for 2ft tank, I found that it is not bright enough. For this second generation I add another 6 LED, thus total 12x3W led. Still 2 rows but 6 LED for each row.
This time I drive both row together using off the self constant current source LED driver
LED driver manufacturing spec:
- Input voltage: AC 85-265V
- Output voltage: DC 28-45V
- Output current: 670mA

The result is quite good, brighter than 2x36W PL light, more LED mean brightness more uniform and all the plant produce bubble 30 minutes after light on. I do not have equipment to measure brightness nor PAR, so I wonder if I put too much light but never mind, will see how it goes.

Initially I was worry about the heat generated by LED. In the previous design there are only 3 LED on the 5x60 cm aluminum plate, now its double and it is not a heat sink just a plate without fins. Temperature measured just right under the LED heat sink show maximum 49.7 degree C. Not sure the Juction temperature though.

My guess probably because the LED driven at 670mA instead of 1A. I did current measurement using Tektronix current Probe and LeCroy scope, it show that maximum current is ~897mA, minimum current is ~589mA and average around ~720mA. Voltage measured at the driver output is 36.75V. Thus the LED took around 26W.

Power used by the whole light set (LED + Driver) is around 27W. LED alone take 26W, thus LED driver efficiency is not that bad, only 1W power loss.
