Slugs, millipede, centipede, ants and other crawlies can start to be comfortable in the growbed. 

How do we get rid of them ?

On flood and drain media base aquaponics, I recommend to flood the growbed. Most crawlies cant survive underwater for long period.

To flood the growbed first stop the siphon action by removing the enclosure bell as photo below.

or remove the siphon cap on the #strainerbell siphon as below,

Once the cap or bell has been remove, the siphon action will stop. This depends on the height of standpipe will cause the growbed to be flooded. If the standpipe is lower than the media height, it is advisable to remove some of the media or change the standpipe extender to a longer extender causing a flooding.

Once the growbed flooded, wait a while and you can now see many creepy crawlies start to make their way to the top of the growbed. This is a good time to get your slug picking chopstick ready and start picking.

How to get rid of ants ?

For ants, I recommend that the high water extender are left there for a few days, and let the siphon operated as normal. Then replace it back to the ones that have water 1" below media height.

I recommend doing this flooding monthly, to ensure slugs etc dont have time to multiply. It is such an easy thing to do anyway.

These Crayfish is very elusive and will hide the moment they saw me coming. I use the Samsung Galaxy S5 with Framelapse apps and leave the phone shooting for about 45 minutes at 1 frame per second.

Next time I will try not to feed them and get the camera ready before feeding, it may give better footage.

Need few more fish to get system balance since I have more Strawberry plants in the growbed in the front. Since the tank already has some Jelawat or Hovens Carp in it, I need to get some hardy fish that can tolerate it.

For the Jelawat tank I bought these Patin or Red Tail Catfish, they are very hardy and able to survive if placed with the Jelawat aggressive behavior.

Another tank I need to stock up already has Lampam, so got few more of these Lampam or Tin Foil Barb. This fish cant survive if I put it with the Jelawat.

I originally started this blog just for a hobby and to keep track of my tanks.  Then as time went on I found there was a lot of information I wanted to have handy to make it easier to get answers to problems and projects.
I have been getting a lot of comments on improvements and requests for specific downloads.  I also receive many requests for advice and articles.  Long story short I am very limited with downloads and features because this is a free based blogg site.  So today I decided to add a donation button and I will see how it goes.  If it works out well I will use the funds to get a "Real" website and registered name for the site..lol

So anyway now the button is there on the top left navigation panel.  If you want to use it feel free to do so and if you dont feel free to continue normally.  Either way dont worry I will still be adding articles and features as time and technical capabilities permit..
